Ecommerce Homepage Checklist: What Belongs Above the Fold

A short checklist for the first screen of an online store: the promise, the offer, the category and the one action.

By Divyanshi Tomar, Founder, The Content Thread

The homepage of an apparel store with a full-width photo, a short headline and one button.

Visitors decide in seconds whether a store is for them. The first screen has to say what you sell, why it is different and what to do next.

The four things to show

  • A promise in one short line, such as “Wear What Feels Free”
  • An offer or reassurance, often in the announcement bar
  • A clear way into the catalogue, like category tiles
  • One main action, such as “Shop now”

Let the photo and the message work together

A strong photo sets the mood, but the headline carries the meaning. Keep the copy short enough to read at a glance, and make sure the button stands out against the image.

Check it on a phone

Most store visits happen on mobile. Make sure the promise, the offer and the button are all visible without scrolling on a small screen.

See this approach in real work.
